Dinner for Schmucks: Movie Review

When you have a director like Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents) and actors like Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, & Zach Galififanakis all on one project, you would think the final product would be a laugh riot, wouldn’t you?  It’s too bad that Dinner for Schmucks is only mildly funny.

Tim (Paul Rudd) is an executive at a financial firm who is trying to climb up in the ranks at work so that he can afford to give his girlfriend Julie (Stephanie Szostak) the kind of life that he thinks she deserves.  Tim makes his move by presenting a great investment to his boss (Bruce Greenwood) at an office meeting.  This move does impress the boss and he is then invited to a dinner that they hold every year in which east person must bring the biggest idiot they can find.

Tim has a run in (literally) with an IRS employee/mouse artist named Barry (Steve Carrell). From the first conversation they have, Tim knows right away that he has found his dinner date. Barry is a very sweet but also complete idiot.  From the moment Barry enters Tim’s life, he makes a complete wreck of it.

My problem with the film is not the actors.  Rudd is playing the same nice guy that you have seen him play before and that’s fine. Carell is having some fun playing the clueless idiot.  My problem is the material that these actors are given.

Dinner for Schmucks is a remake of a French film called Le Diner de Cons which I have never actually seen, but to my understanding, most of the original film took place at the actual dinner.  In the new version, the dinner is only the last 10-15 minutes of a 2 hour movie.  I felt that the movie was running on fumes until the dinner scene (which is the best part of the film) There are quite a few laughs to be had in the movie, but they felt so few and far between.

The Kids Are All Right: Movie Review

This summer started out extremely depressing with studios dropping clunkers one after another upon unsuspecting moviegoers.  Things seem to be looking up a bit (for now).  Over the past few weeks I feel like I have started to be entertained again by what was on the silver screen.  Sure, I would not call The Sorcerer’s Apprentice or Salt good movies, but at least I was somewhat entertained by them.  Inception proved to be a real breakthrough in many ways. Now, we get our great smaller movie of the season with the release of The Kids Are All Right.

The Kids Are All Right is a movie that I knew would be great before I even walked into the theater, mainly because I could not find one person who had seen it before me that did not love the film.  These are people for the most part that I trust in their opinions.  I may not always agree with them 100% but I come pretty close.

The story revolves around Jules (Julianne Moore) & Nic (Annette Bening), a same sex couple who have 2 children named Joni (Mia Wasikowska) & Laser (Josh Hutcherson) .  The two teenagers decide to track down their biological father now that the older sibling is 18 years old.    Once they meet their mother(s) sperm donor Paul (Mark Ruffalo), they decide to spend some time getting to know each other before Joni goes off to college.

Once Paul enters into the picture of this unconventional family, a lot of personal issues between Jules and Nic come to light and things do not go smoothly.  I feel Annette Bening is really effective as Nic. You can tell how threatened she feels with the new change in the family that is occurring. I also like Ruffalo’s care-free Paul.  He is a good guy but at the same time, does not seem to understand how to really be part of a family.  Moore is fine as Jules but I feel she is overshadowed by Bening.

One thing I really loved about the film is how real all the character interactions felt.  There was not a single false note in the film and the writing by writer/director Lisa Cholodenko (Laurel Canyon) is top knotch. I found myself laughing quite a bit and the intimate scenes between Jules & Nic are beautifully handled.

I hope the Kids Are All Right finds a big audience in theaters this summer.  I know that the younger set of moviegoers seem to lean more towards the big blockbuster fare when it comes to buying tickets, but maybe since most of those blockbusters that are our right now are major disappointments, they will trust the word of mouth and give this film a shot.

Trek Life & Oddisee – West Coast Beats Mixtape

Trek Life and Oddisee continue to tease fans with another mixtape preceding the release of Trek Life’s sophomore album, Everything Changed Nothing. The mixtape, West Coast Beats, includes a concoction of snippets of instrumentals from the upcoming album, exclusive Oddisee beats, the first single, “So Supreme”, and an exclusive Oddisee-produced Trek Life track called “Get In Touch”, found only on this mixtape.

While Oddisee’s beats have a laid back California feel, he adds a strong synth that keeps reigns on the tracks and keeps them from becoming repetitive. The mixture of styles separates California music from its usual clichés by adding an urban feel. Oddisee says, “When I cruise LA and listen to those tracks I really feel like we accomplished what we set out to [do] with this album, giving a city theme music.”

Salt: Movie Review

Director Phillip Noyce is one of those filmmakers who seems to be able to make entertaining Hollywood films with fine actors yet few of his works are memorable (The Bone Collector, The Saint, Clear & Present Danger, Patriot Games, and my personal favorites, Blind Fury, Dead Calm).  The last two are films that I really enjoyed but were seen by a fewer people than the first few mentioned.  You can now add Salt to that list.

Salt is basically another one of those paint-by-numbers action/chase films that we have seen countless times (The Bourne/Mission: Impossible Franchises, The Fugitive and its’ sequel that hardly anyone remembers) and that’s just to name a few.   What sets Salt apart from the rest is that the main character is a woman (though the part was originally written for a man).

The story centers on CIA officer Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) who while questioning a defector is informed by him that she is in fact a Russian spy that has been planted in the US for many years just waiting to be activated and that she is supposed to kill a major political figure. This information is revealed to her while Evelyn’s fellow agents are listening to the conversation that is happening in the interrogation room of the CIA.  Agent Salt knows she is being set up and figures out a way to escape from CIA headquarters so she can go warn her husband who she feels is in danger.

Salt is being hunted by her partner, agent Ted Winter (Live Schreiber) and agent Peabody (Chiwetel Ejiofor). These are 2 actors that I love to watch when they are given better material to work with.  If you have ever seen Ejiofor in Red belt, Serenity, or Inside Man, then you know what I am talking about.  Same thing goes for Schreiber (who happened to be the only good thing about last year’s Wolverine movie).   As both men are on the hunt, they both have questions about whether Salt is actually a spy or if she is being set up.  The answer becomes less clear as the film progresses.  That is one of the best things about the film.  I would find myself questioning things that I was so sure I knew the answers to.

There are some great set pieces and you can tell that Jolie did a lot of the stunts herself (She did things in this movie that you don’t see many male action stars doing themselves).  There is one scene in an elevator shaft that to me was just so implausible that it actually made me laugh at the fact that they had the Salt character do it.   There is also a great kill at the end of the film that made the whole theater cheer and I was right along with them.  It was probably the most original moment in the whole movie.

If you feel like going to see a film that has some good chases, a few twists, and a few more chases thrown in, and don’t mind feeling like you just paid $10.50 to see a movie you know you have seen before just starring a different set of actors, than you can do a lot worse than Salt.

Inception: Movie Review

Normally when it comes to big budget summer entertainment at the movies, I don’t expect much more than an entertainingly loud and stupid F/X laden piece of work.  And that is if I am lucky.  A lot of times I get the loud & stupid, but the entertaining part is missing.  Now, I am about to use one word to describe the new film by director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight), and that word would be..SMART.
Walking out of this movie, I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about it.  The running time is about 2 hours and 30 minutes, and at times the pacing is really slow.  I can tell you the person I saw the movie with (my mother) absolutely hated the film.  And I kept hearing people talking around me, asking the person that they were watching the movie with what was happening on screen.  I also noticed that there were people getting agitated with how much was happening on the screen at once.
“Inception” is not an easy film to review because there is so much going on in the story and if I decided to talk about it in this review, it may affect your enjoyment of experiencing the film.  I made it a point to not read up on anything about the film before seeing it and Warner Brothers has been very smart about keeping much of the story out of the trailers.
The premise of the film follows Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), a skilled dream thief, who assembles a team which consists of Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Ariadne (Ellen Page), Eames (Tom Hardy), & Yusuf (Dileep Rao).  They take a job from Saito (Ken Watanabe) to implant an idea into a business competitor of Saito named Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy).  The problem is that implanting an idea in someone’s mind is much more complicated than taking one out.  That is really the most I would like to tell you about the story as the movie works best when the audience knows as little as possible.  I do not want to spoil the story for you.
When I tell you that the movie is smart, I really mean it.  This is not your average summer blockbuster fare.  It will be interesting to see how the general public accepts the film because it is a strong piece of work but at the same time, it is not for everyone.  Don’t expect anything to be just handed to you because you are going to have to work pretty hard at staying on top of things that are happening on screen.  If you are reading my review and still a little confused on how I actually felt about the movie, that might make quite a bit of sense considering I am still not 100% sure. I would recommend it based on the level of masterful work that is on display in the film.  The last 20 minutes are incredible. There are some beautiful landscapes that have been created in dream worlds.  All the actors involved give strong performances and Nolan really knows how to bring us something on screen that we haven’t seen before.
“Inception” plays out like a complex maze and if you find yourself struggling with the film, just let it play out and do not worry about how complex it is. At its core, the film is an old school heist movie…the only thing that’s different, is that they are not robbing banks, they are robbing minds.  I may have to give “Inception” a second viewing when it comes out on blu-ray so I can really get a better idea of my feelings towards the film. This is actually one of those movies that lends itself to repeat viewings because there is so much going on that you might have missed some things the first time around.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice: Movie Review

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice follows the story of sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicholas Cage) who is one of 3 apprentices to the great wizard Merlin. When Merlin is betrayed & killed by one of his apprentice’s Maxim Hovath (Alfred Molina), Balthazar captures and imprisons Maxim with Merlin’s greatest enemy Morgana for centuries while he goes on a quest to find Merlin’s replacement.

Now in modern day New York City, Balthazar finds who he has searched hundreds of years for and that person arrives in the form of Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel). Dave is a reluctant protégé who goes into training to become a sorcerer so he can help Balthazar recapture a freed Maxim.  Now there are other elements to Apprentice like a love interest for Dave and an imprisoned love for Balthazar, but I really do not feel I need to go into those details.

“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” was directed by John Turteltaub who is probably best known for directing the two “National Treasure” films (soon to be third) for Disney, which also starred Nicholas Cage. I would think it’s safe to say that these guys really like to work with each other.  Now if you are a fan of the Treasure films, you might find yourself enjoying “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”.   Not because they are the same movie, but because Turteltaub seems to be able to do what other directors have been having trouble doing over the past 10 years, that is getting a fun performance out of Cage.  He really seems to enjoy himself in this film and when Cage is having fun with a role, the audience is almost always having fun watching him.  Now, I am not saying this is up to par with Cage’s best roles, because it’s far from it, but it is a fun one.

I usually like Jay Baruchel.  He was really funny in “Tropic Thunder” & “Knocked Up”, but after this year’s “She’s Out Of My League” & now this movie.  I am starting to feel like he is a one trick pony.  I am hoping he can play something other than a hyperactive geek.  If you like Baruchel’s other performances, then you won’t mind him here, it’s really just more of the same.

As for Alfred Molina, how can you not love this guy, he was the only bright spot in this past spring’s horrible video game-movie adaptation “Prince Of Persia” and he brings the same fun and energy to his villain Maxim for this film.  Molina is another actor who just seems to enjoy these big fantasy films, where he can just go all out.

I am not sure if I have set the bar so low for my standards this summer on what a good popcorn movie should be or if “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is actually good, but I can tell you this.  I wasn’t bored.  I can’t say the same thing about 95% of the fantasy films that have come out in the last 4 months. Up to this point of the 2010 summer season, I can count the amount of films I actually enjoyed on one hand and still have a couple fingers left over.   If you are looking for a movie to take the family to and you have already seen “Toy Story 3”  Then you can do much worse than “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and be greatfull that Disney did not decide to convert this film into 3-D.
