Jonah Hex: Movie Review

There have been many bad movies based on comic books. Ghost Rider, Fantastic 4, the 1990’s versions of Captain America & The Punisher (I actually enjoyed both of this decade's Punisher films, not saying that they were good, but I am saying that I enjoyed them). Now we are in the year 2010 and I feel like I can safely say that I have just watched this decade’s single worst comic-to-movie adaptation, which is “Jonah Hex” (and yes, I am including the graphic novel-to-movie adaptation of “The Spirit”).

The film starts out with a prologue that shows Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) as a soldier who disobeys the order of his commander, Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich) and in the process, kills the son of the commander. Turnbull decides to kill Hex's wife and son as Hex is forced to watch. Hex is scarred then left for dead. An Indian tribe brings him back from the brink of death and in turn gives him the ability to talk to the dead.

Turnbull made the world think that he died in a fire. Hex decides to become a bounty hunter, until one day the US Military come calling and letting him know that Quentin Turnball is still alive and that he has stolen a powerful weapon that can be used to level cities/towns. Hex of course agrees to help the military for his own vengeful reasons.

There are so many problems with this film that it is hard for me to figure out where to begin. The script is completely lazy. There seems to be no effort put into character development. You do not get any reasons that make sense for Quentin Turnball’s motivation. Malkovich looks completely bored in the roll. He seems to be just walking through his scenes. Megan Fox plays Lilah, a hooker that has a soft spot for Jonah Hex. I would not say that Fox was bad in the roll, but it does not seem like she was given much to do. As for Josh Brolin’s performance at Jonah Hex, he was fine, the look was right, the attitude was right, but he was not interesting to watch at all.

The film was directed by Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears A Who!). That’s right, this guys last and only directing job was a computer animated film based on a children’s book. He has plenty of experience as an animator but is completely lost when it comes to directing a live action film.

I went into this movie with low expectations and was still disappointed. I knew about all the problems on the set of the movie and all the reshoots. Even the trailer (which they released just weeks before the release date of the movie) did not look all that interesting. But I still wanted to see Jonah Hex for myself. I can’t seem to pass up a comic book movie adaptation.

The Karate Kid (2010): Movie Review

I grew up in the 1980’s, so of course I was and still am a fan of the original 1984 Ralph Macchio & Noriyuki ‘Pat’ Morita film “The Karate Kid”. I even enjoyed parts 2 & 3 (Though they were not as great as the original), but I loathed the 4^th film where they replaced Macchio with a young Hilary Swank. The only reason I own “The Next Karate Kid” (aka Karate Kid 4) on DVD is because it came in the box set with the first 3 movies and it’s on the same disk as the 3^rd film…so I can’t get rid of it, even though I really want to.

Having just given you my feelings on the original film, I feel this new remake of “The Karate Kid” is very unnecessary, and I feel they should have left the original alone (but that’s my feeling towards most remakes). But the thing is, this new version is a pretty decent movie. They kept a lot of the key elements from the original in the remake but by changing the characters names, ages and locations, it really does feel like a very different movie, though it does drag on quite a bit.

The film centers on Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) who movies to China with his mom Sherry Parker (Played with great energy and attitude by Taraji P. Henson) . If you have seen the original film, you know exactly how the movie will play out. Dre will meet a young girl named Meiying (Wenwen Han) that he likes but the school bully named Cheng (Zhenwei Wang) has eyes for her as well and decides to beat up Dre in the middle of the park to teach him a lesson about talking to his girl. Dre is of course very unhappy about the whole situation and he just wants to move them back home.

During an exciting chase sequence through the streets of China between Dre and Chengs pre-teen thugs, they all gang up on Dre, but then Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) steps in to protect Dre. Eventually Han agrees to teach Dre kung fu for the same reasons Mr . Miyagi trained Daniel Larusso in the original film, so if you have seen the original, you know what to expect. And if you haven’t see the original, well….go ahead and rent the DVD. You will most likely enjoy it more than this new version. And of course the film will end with a big tournament. Gee, I bet you can’t guess who will win ?????

There are some great locations and some pretty decent acting by everyone involved, especially from Henson as Dre’s mom. But I still cannot give a strong recommendation of this film simply for just the fact that you can see the 1984 version and witness a much greater movie. That said. If you do chose to go see the 2010 version, it will not be a film you have to suffer through either.

Splice: Movie Review

If you were to go by the trailers for “Splice” you would assume that the movie would be a Sci-Fi/Horror blend. Something on the lines of films like “Species” or “Aliens”. You would not expect that this film would be more about moral & ethical boundaries and how far should we go in the name of science , also teaching someone/something the difference between right and wrong. In my mind, those happen to be the key elements of “Splice” and the film wound up being a very welcome surprise.

Clive Nicoli (Adrian Brody) and Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley) are 2 young scientists who work at trying to create cures for cancer and other ailments by splicing together different animal DNA. When Clive & Elsa are threatened with the news that they are going to lose their lab, Elsa manipulates Clive into going through with splicing human DNA with that of an animal. Clive knows this is a bad idea, yet he lets Elsa talk him into it. In a matter of weeks their creation is here and she is aging at a rapid rate. Even though Clive sees this as only an experiment, Elsa bonds with the young female and even names her Dren (Nerd backwards).

The full grown Dren is played by Delphnie Chanéac and she is really amazing, giving this creation some real heart without speaking a single word. The effect use to create Dren is basically a real actress with some CGI enhancements, and even though it does come off as looking a little to fake at times, especially with the effects used to create her legs. I still think it is very effective.

As it becomes harder to keep Dren a secret in the lab, they decide to move her to an old abandoned farm house that was left to Elsa by her family. Dren is not happy about being locked up in a barn and kept out of the world, and she tends to show her resentment at times. Elsa begins to get frustrated with Dren, but at the same time Clive begins to bond with her and care for her. Dren’s human nature makes her just want to be loved and understood. But her animal instincts blended with her human emotions make her very dangerous, especially when she has a venomous stinger at the end of her tail.

Of course the final act of the film takes you right where you expected it would, but the journey taken to that final act makes the film well worth seeing. The whole idea of the risks you are taking when you try to create a new species (no matter what the reason is) is very interesting. You have no real idea of what will be the outcome. And the moral questions become harder to answer if you are not a religious person.

“Splice” does not become too preachy and there is still quite a bit of fun to be had while watching the film, but it will have you come away with some interesting thoughts and feelings.
